Recitals—Tuesday Student Recitals, Junior and Senior Recitals

Recital Requirements

All candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree must prove satisfactory performance ability by performing publicly in recital. Students studying toward the performance degree will perform a half recital in the junior year, and a full recital in the senior year. Music education majors will perform a half recital in the senior year. Note: All music majors (with the exception of keyboard performance majors) must successfully complete the piano proficiency examination prior to performing their senior recital.

Guidelines for Junior/Senior Recital Preparation

1. The applied instructor and student will select a program and performance date.

2. Contact an accompanist if one is needed (see “Accompanying Policy”).

3. Reserve Akin Auditorium through the Music Office for the performance date and at least one rehearsal.

4. A recital preview is required at least three weeks prior to the performance date. Select this date with the aid of the applied teacher, and they will then notify the faculty. All faculty need not be present at every
hearing. There should be at least two faculty present at each hearing.

5. A reception is optional.

6. Write out the program information and give it to the Music Office prior to the recital preview.

7. Contact the students responsible for lighting and recording. Make these arrangements at least three weeks prior to the performance date. The student will need to provide a cassette tape (Type II, Cro2).

8. For publicity, fill out a press release immediately after passing the preview. Posters can be make advertising the event. Student Affairs will have to approve them before they can be posted on campus.

9. All Junior and Senior recital programs must utilize the standardized department format (contact Music Program Secretary for design). If desired, recital programs can be type-set in the Music Office so they can be camera-ready to take to any print shop. Students who select to have their program type-set in the music office must submit all program information no later than one week prior to the performance date. Note: The student is responsible for type-setting program notes, translations, and/or other materials not included in the standardized format. These materials should be separate from the main body of the recital program.

10. After the recital, turn in five programs to the Music Office.

Recital Previews

Before the recital is performed publicly, the student will be required to demonstrate to the faculty in his/her performance area that the program is ready for pubic performance. The music must be correct and, if applicable must be at last three weeks prior to the public performance date. No exceptions will be make! It is up to the applied teacher to contact all teachers involved to set the preview date

If the preview is not passed, the student may re-try as long as two weeks remain before the recital date. Two previews may be scheduled in any given semester. A second failure will result in cancellation until the following semester.

Publicity

All publicity for concerts and recitals will be released through the Office of Public Information. Every person responsible for a concert or recital will fill out a press release/checklist with their applied teacher at least three weeks prior to the activity. The Music Office will take care of forwarding information to the Office of Public Information to notify the Times-Record News, the home-town newspaper, and the Wichitan.
