1.03    Music Program Probation Policy

March 8, 2005

All music majors should demonstrate the highest ideals of study in their primary performance area, participate in ensembles, and class attendance. The Music Probation Policy is for students who specifically fall below standards in one of the following areas:

1. Semester GPA below 2.0.

2. Overall GPA below 2.0.

3. Any semester grade below C in any MUSC or AMUS course.

4. Poor attendance or lack of serious study in any MUSC or AMUS course.

A student placed on probation will receive a personal letter from the Department of Music Chair stating specifically the concerns of the music faculty. A copy of the letter will be placed in the student’s file and a copy will be given to the student’s advisor. At no time will a list of students on probation be posted or released outside the department in any way.

Students are expected to immediately correct those concerns. Students on Department of Music Probation for longer than one semester will be evaluated by the music faculty to determine whether the students may continue as a music major.

Students placed on Department of Music Probation who are aware of extenuating circumstances in their academic studies may petition the music faculty to have probationary status removed.

Students pursuing music certification should be aware that beginning in the Fall 1999 semester a grade of “D” in any music subject (the student’s major) will not be accepted for graduation. Similarly, beginning in the Fall 2004 semester a grade of “D” in any music subject (the student’s major) will not be accepted for graduation for any music degree.
