1.02    Music Program Class Attendance Policy

March 8, 2005

The responsibility for classroom attendance, as part of satisfactory completion of a course, is under the control of each faculty member. A student who misses a class or plans to miss a class(es) must contact the faculty member(s) directly regarding an excused absence policy for each course and should then work with the individual faculty member relative to any absences that may occur.

Beginning with the Spring 2005 semester, the music faculty are taking a concerted attendance policy in the hopes that consistent classroom attendance will stimulate greater learning. To this end, the faculty have decided to implement the following policy regarding attendance: in MWF classes a student will be dropped from the course with a failing grade after 5 [unexcused] absences; in TR classes a student will be dropped after 3 [unexcused] absences. Whether or not to include absences for which the student has made contact with the professor in advance is at the discretion of the individual professor.

In an emergency situation or where there is an extremely personal and/or confidential matter, the Dean of Student’s office can be notified first and the staff will coordinate notification of the absence(s) to appropriate faculty member or University offices. On such occasions, the student may make phone contact with the Dean’s Office, but he/she will need to be prepared to go in for a personal consultation.
