MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS AND DONORS

Akin Music Scholarship - Established in 1981 by a gift from Mr. J. W. Akin and Dr. Nita Akin of Wichita Falls. Awarded to music majors of any undergraduate classification on the basis of academic excellence, music potential, and need.

Boren-Jacobsen Band Scholarship - Established in 1974 by former band students and friends of Dr. James Boren, MSU President from 1942 to 1955, and Dr. Jim Jacobsen, MSU Director of Bands from 1945 to 1955. Awarded to music major band students of any undergraduate classification on the basis of academic merit, musical performance, and letters of recommendation.

Bristol Choral Scholarship - Established in 1981 by a gift from Mr. And Mrs. Harold Bristol of Wichita Falls.  Awarded to voice students of any undergraduate classification on the basis of academic excellence and music potential.

Didzun Music Scholarship - Established in 1970 by friends and former students of Mrs. O.J. Didzun of Wichita Falls, a former MSU Music Department faculty member. Awarded to music students of any classification on basis of academic merit and music potential.

Evening in Italy Music Scholarship - Funded by proceeds from the annual “Evening in Italy” scholarship dinner sponsored by the MSU Music Program.  Awarded to music students of any classification on the basis of musical ability and academic merit.

“Give Something Back” Scholarship - Established in 1986 by MSU alumni from the 1948-54 period. Awarded to full-time music majors of any classification.

Haddon Band Scholarship - Established in 1974 by a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Joe L. Haddon of Wichita Falls and subsequent gifts in Dr. Haddon’s memory following his death in 1981. Awarded to music major band students on the basis of musical ability, academic achievement, and recommendations of high-school band director.

Huff Music Scholarship - Established in 1975 by Mrs. Lucille Brooks Huff of Wichita Falls. Awarded to music majors of any classification on the basis of academic achievement and music potential.

Mad Medics Instrumental Music Scholarship - Established in 1983 by a gift to MSU by the “Mad Medics” of Wichita Falls, a Dixieland band composed of local physicians and businessmen. Awarded to full-time instrumental music majors of any classification on the basis of academic excellence, music potential, citizenship, and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Ruby Murrell and Bob Murrell Endowment for Music Majors - Mrs. Thelma Murrell of Wichita Falls established this endowment for music majors in 1991. The fund was made in honor of her late husband and sister-in-law. Both attended Hardin Junior College and were musicians. Bob sang in a quartet while at Hardin and later sang in the First Baptist Church choir. Ruby played the organ and piano. Recipients of the Murrell Scholarships are outstanding full-time students majoring in music.

Musicians’ Club Scholarship - Established in 1981 by the Wichita Falls Musicians Club. Awarded to music majors of any undergraduate classification on the basis of musical ability and academic achievement.

Underwood Memorial Scholarship - Established in 1961 by family and friends in memory of W. L. Underwood, former Fine Arts Editor of the Wichita Falls Times and Record news. Awarded to music majors of any classification on the basis of academic achievement and musical ability.

White Organ Scholarship - Established in 1974 by friends of Dr. and Mrs. Travis White on the occasion of Dr. White’s retirement as MSU President (1956-1974). Awarded to organ students of any classification on the basis of musical ability and academic merit.
