Music Degrees Midwestern State University offers the Bachelor of Music Degree with Teacher Certification (Vocal or Instrumental emphasis) and the Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance (Vocal, Instrumental, or Keyboard emphasis). Keyboard students choosing the Bachelor of Music Degree with Teacher Certification should choose either the vocal track or the instrumental track. All of the degree plans listed here are for informational purposes only. The official course requirements are listed in the University catalog, available from the Registrar. All of the degree plans show total required hours within a minimum and maximum of hours such as 127-133. This is because the student may choose to take two 3-hour science courses instead of two 4-hour science courses and the piano proficiency requirement is listed as 0-4 hours on all degrees except Keyboard Performance. The total hours for each degree does not include remedial coursework. The student should understand that dropping, failing, or having to retake any coursework will make it difficult to graduate in four years. For the degrees with teacher certification, approximately 35% of coursework is in the core curriculum, 15% is in professional education coursework in the College of Education (including student teaching), and 50% of coursework is music classes. For the professional degrees in performance, approximately 35% of coursework is in the core curriculum and 65% of coursework is in music classes. ADMISSION TO EDUCATION PROGRAM. Students working toward teacher certification must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. To be admitted to the Education Program in the fourth or fifth semester, the student must have a 2.5 gpa average for the six hours of freshman English, have completed 60 hours or coursework with no grade below C in the major area, and have an overall (all coursework) gpa of 2.75. BACHELOR OF MUSIC with TEACHER CERTIFICATION—INSTRUMENTAL and VOCAL) The core curriculum requirement (academic foundations) for the Bachelor of Music--Teacher Certification degree is the same for instrumental emphasis or vocal emphasis with the exception of the Kinesiology (PE) requirement. Instrumental students will automatically be enrolled in University Marching Band each fall semester. Four semesters of Marching Band counts for the entire Kinesiology requirement. Vocal students will need to complete two KNES activity courses or one KNES activity course and KNES 1011 Fundamentals of Physical Activity and Health. Vocal students can still be a member of the University Marching Band and complete the KNES requirement with four semesters of marching band. However, vocal students must still use University Singers as their major ensemble and would need to be in both University Singers and University Marching Band to fulfill the KNES requirement in this way. Vocal students who choose to fulfill the KNES requirement in this way can also count two semesters of upper-level Marching Band as their Advanced Electives (2 hours required under music classes).
