Fall 2011 Schedule (tentative)

Dear Band Member,

Welcome back to returning members of the MSU Bands!   And to the new and prospective members of the MSU Bands, welcome and we hope you join us.  We hope you plan to continue your education at MSU and also plan to be a very important member of the MSU Band. The MSU Band is the largest student group on campus and very highly regarded by the faculty, the student body, and the community. We have an exciting schedule for our 24th year that includes a performance in Cowboys Stadium.   We want to make sure you know we want you to be a part of all the fun.

Pre-band rehearsals will begin with a rehearsal from  6:30-8 pm on Sunday, August 14.  Rehearsals will then run from noon to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm for four days (August 15-18 only). Dinner is provided on Sunday and Monday and fun after-rehearsal activities are planned each night by Kappa Kappa Psi.  It is important that you be at the pre-band rehearsals.  Please look at the enclosed schedule and let me know in advance if you cannot attend any pre-band rehearsals.  When classes begin, the Marching Band will rehearse on Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 2-2:50 and on Tuesday nights from 6-9 p.m.   We do not have weekend rehearsals and we do not hold class beyond class time because of other class conflicts. The enclosed Fall 2011 Schedule tells you of every activity you will be expected to be at.

Uniforms, instruments, and the band shirt are provided at no cost and the only things you need to provide are white marching shoes, white socks, and white gloves. We will order white shoes during pre-band week but you can take care of your shoes early by going to a website like www.mccormicksnet.com and purchasing white marching shoes.  The cost will be between $27 and $40 and we recommend the MTX marching shoe in white.

Band members can check into the dorms early on Sunday afternoon, August 14.  The dorms do not open for other students until Tuesday.  Kappa Kappa Psi will be helping you with moving in.  We will send a complete list of band members to the Housing Office the week before pre-band.  Check back here for a phone number you can call on Sunday afternoon August 14th to get help with moving into the dorms.

Check the Roster

Since we will begin to write drill and everyone gets a spot on the field, we need to know if you can or can't be with us in the fall. Check the roster online.  If you are not on the roster and should be, if you are in the wrong section, or if you are on the roster and should not be, please let me know.  You can email me at larry.archambo@mwsu.edu or call (940) 397-4210 (office) and leave a message letting us know what changes to make. Don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions.

The MSU Band is a great experience and we hope you will join us.  We hope to see you in the MSU Band in August.

Dr. Archambo and Mr. Black

Frequently Asked Questions about the MSU Band Program

What if I have a course conflict with any of the rehearsal times for Marching Band?

It is possible to be in the University Marching Band and still take a course that meets at the same time as Marching Band. The Marching Band rehearses for 6 hours each week and it is possible to take a course that conflicts with up to 2-3 hours of that rehearsal time. For example, you might be enrolled in Marching Band and also for a science lab that meets on Wednesdays from 2-3 pm. We recommend you go ahead and sign up for the other course first.  You will then need to add Marching Band.  One of the band directors can help you add marching band as a course conflict.  You will receive full academic credit for both courses.

Do I get a scholarship for playing in the Marching Band?

Everyone in their first two fall semesters of Marching Band receives a scholarship of $125, regardless of major. Beginning with the second year, marching band scholarships go up to $225.  No audition is required and the scholarship is automatic.

How does the Marching Band for Physical Education substitution work?

Everyone at MSU must take two Kinesology (PE) courses (now 1 credit hours each) on all degrees. Two semesters of Marching Band (lower-level or upper-level) will substitute for the entire Kinesology requirement.  No additional paperwork required.

Is there a Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, or Steel Drums at MSU?

The Jazz Ensemble rehearses in the Band hall from 2-3:20 Tuesday/Thursday. You must contact Mr. Alan Black at 397-4186 to make arrangements for auditions or placement in the Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Ensemble is always looking for great players.  The Percussion Ensemble is a group of percussionists under the direction of Alan Black that performs percussion music.  MSU also has a Steel Drum band call The Steel Bandits under Mr. Black's direction. The Percussion Ensemble and The Steel Bandits rehearse every week during the fall and spring semesters. One hour of credit is available each semester. Contact Alan Black if you are interested in playing in the Percussion Ensemble or in playing steel drums.

Do I have to audition for the Marching Band and what do I have to provide to be in the Marching Band?

There is no audition to be in the MSU Marching Band.  Marching Band members need to provide white marching shoes, white socks, and white gloves. The Band will provide the Band t-shirt. Uniforms, instruments, and the t-shirt are provided to students at no charge.

What about spring-semester bands, spring scholarships, and the Fine-Arts Substitution for Symphonic Band?

In the spring semester we have the Symphonic Band (open to anyone without audition) which rehearses on MWF from 2-2:50 pm and the Wind Ensemble (auditions take place in November) which rehearses from 3-3:50 pm. The scholarship is $100 for either group if you were in the Marching Band the previous fall. Three semesters of Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble substitute for the Fine Arts requirement on all degrees.

What about the Basketball Pep Band for men’s and women’s basketball games?

The Basketball Pep Band plays for men’s and women’s home games. Everyone in the Pep Band receives a scholarship (if they were in the Marching Band the previous semester).  Scholarships vary by semester but have been up to $250. Enrollment in the Pep Band is during the spring semester only, but the Pep Band also plays 4 to 6 games late in the Fall semester.  Last year the Basketball Pep Band attended the NCAA Elite 8 National Basketball Tournament in Springfield, MA.

When does the Winterguard rehearse?

The Winterguard begins rehearsals near the end of the marching season, usually early November. They rehearse in evenings to avoid conflicts with classes. The competitive season for Winterguard usually begins in early February and runs through mid-April. One hour of credit is available during the Spring semester. Contact Mr. Black if you are interested in Winterguard at MSU.

Who do I call if I have more questions?

Call:  Dr. Larry Archambo at (940)397-4210 or Mr. Alan Black at (940) 397-4186

Information for Academic Advisors

Give to your advisor when you register for classes.  If you have questions, call (940)397-4210, (940)397-4186, or (940)642-6076.

Please enroll me in the MSU Marching Band for Fall 2011:

Lower Level (Freshmen and Sophomores)

10687 --MUSC1041-101 Univ. Marching Band, MWF, 2:00pm-2:50pm, FM105, Black
                         T        6:00-9:00 p.m.

Upper Level (Juniors and Seniors)

                         T        6:00-9:00 p.m.

We DO permit students to be in the Marching Band if the student has a conflict between a scheduled Marching Band rehearsal time and another scheduled class (such as a lab).  In this case, please enroll in the other course first.  You can always add marching band during the first few days of class.  The computer will not take both courses at the same time unless the enrollment form is signed “time conflict OK”.  Advisors may sign the enrollment form “time conflict OK” to the right of Marching Band for those students with a conflict if you wish.  Or Dr. Archambo or Mr. Black can sign an add form to put Marching Band on the schedule during add week in August.

There are NO weekend rehearsals for Marching Band.  We meet only at the regularly scheduled rehearsal times.  Because of scheduling this fall 2011, we play for four home football games and the game in Cowboys Stadium.

Marching Band is a one credit-hour course.  All members of the Marching Band receive a scholarship, regardless of their major area of study.  Two semesters of Marching Band substitute for the Kinesiology requirement.  Students receive an MSU Band letter jacket at the beginning of their fourth year in Marching Band.

For any questions, Dr. Archambo can be reached at his office at (940) 397-4210 or on his cell phone
at 642-6076.
